DISTRICT AND STATE CALENDARClick here to view the updated calendar that lists all district and state thespian events as they become available. REGISTERING FOR STATE FESTIVALFor the second year, registration packets WILL NOT be mailed. Instead, the complete packet in its recognizable form, will be on the web after December 14, 2008. After that date, you will be able to open the forms on your computer (as long as you have the latest version of Adobe Reader) and complete the forms on your computer. Math will automatically be figured as you add names and days passes and all name badges will be spelled exactly as you entered them. When you have finished typing the forms on line, you will print them to your printer, enclose your school check and mail everything back to me as usual. NO PACKET WILL BE ACCEPTED WITH A POSTMARK BEFORE FEBRUARY 4, 2009 AND NO PACKET WILL BE ACCEPTED WITH A POSTMARK AFTER FEBRUARY 10, 2009. MAINSTAGESThe moratorium list, application for mainstaging and sample critique sheet for mainstaging is now on the web. Click here. Remember that TO SCREENING OF MAINSTAGES CAN BE SCHEDULED DURING THE FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF THEATRE EDUCATORS MEETING OR THE FLORIDA THEATRE CONFERENCE. Details are provided on the actual mainstage application. This year mainstages will available on Thursday and Friday night in Ferguson Hall, TECO Theatre, Tampa Theatre, Morsani Hall and possibly a nearby proscenium venue. DAY PASS GUIDELINES REMAIN THE SAMETHE ONLY PERSON THAT CAN PURCHASE DAY PASSES IS THE SPONSOR. The sponsor may purchase Day Passes on only two occasions. The first occasion will be in the actual registration packet with the fee included in the big school check. The second occasion to purchase day passes will be at the registration table on the day the troupe registers for the Festival. This board decision means that every sponsor is going to have to communicate to their parents that they have only 2 chances to purchase day passes to see their child perform. They must either notify you before your registration packet is sent in or you must have their commitment when you register on Wednesday of the festival. Parents will no longer be able to simply drive up at the last moment and expect to get a seat to anything! The price of day passes is $20 per day/per adult if ordered at pre-registration and $30 per day/per adult if ordered by the sponsor at registration of the Wednesday of the Festival. Day passes continue to be designed for parents and guardians to come and support their children perform. No student may enter the Festival with a day pass. The only way a student will enter the Festival is by being a fully registered member of an affiliated troupe. ONLY THOSE DAY PASSES PRE-PURCHASED WITH REGISTRATION WILL BE ABLE TO GET TICKETS TO SEE A MAINSTAGE. All mainstage shows will be sold out by the time the actual registration for state begins on Wednesday. BOARD REVIEWS AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT.
The board reviewed the laws and guidelines regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act and adopted the following policy, “The Florida State Thespian Board will provide any auxiliary aid required for effective communication or appropriate space for any individual, but the cost will be incurred by the individual school or school district.”
The registration materials will now ask if ADA accommodations are needed for any member of your troupe - and, if yes, what exact accommodations are requested. BOARD REVIEWS CANDIDATES FOR THE NEXT STATE DIRECTORMichael Higgins will be serving as State Director through Festival 2010. After Festival 2010, a new State Director will take over. The board has solicited names and resumes for the new director and is working on its recommendation for the Educational Theatre Association. Details on the candidate(s) will available on this web in mid-September 08. CHANGES IN ONE ACTSOne acts will now be using Morsani Hall on Wednesday. For the one act moratorium, click here. For the one act slots scheduled to your district, click here. FOUR NEW RULES FOR COLLEGE/SCHOLARSHIP AUDITIONS:
TROUPES NOW TO PROVIDE DANCE CHAPERONEOn the registration paperwork for each troupe, you will be asked to designate one dance chaperone for the Saturday night dance with the expectation that this chaperone will remain in close proximity to the dance for the entire time his/her troupe is in attendance at the dance. OPENING CEREMONIES NOW SEPARATED FROM DISTRICT SHOWCASEThe board voted to have Opening Ceremonies match Closing Ceremonies in scheduling. The ceremonies will be separated from the showcase. This will give the troupe the option of attending just the Opening Ceremonies - - or the Opening Ceremonies AND the District Showcase performance. DISTRICT SHOWCASE PIECESAll are reminded that those pieces chosen at the district level to represent the district by performing at Opening Ceremonies will be ADJUDICATED and will be TIMED. All rules regarding the Individual Event are expected to be followed in the showcase. INTERESTED IN SPLITTING YOUR DISTRICTThe board approved the process for splitting a district. The existing and newly created district must have 10 affiliated schools in each. Two thirds (2/3) of the schools must agree to the split. Each district must have a person who will agree to char. Finally, proof that all of the criteria has been met must be submitted to the state board for ratification . REGISTRATION FEETo keep up with rising costs at all venues, the board has set the registration fee for Festival 2009 $80.00. |
